I understand you'd all want to see RE in Doubt, but why would you leave if the understudy is on? The tickets are non-refundable, so you'd through the money away? That doesn't really make sense, unless chucking close to $100 away doesn't mean much - hey, I'll take it! ;D And it is a crap-shoot. You get the announcement in the Playbill when you arrive to the theatre, that's how it's done. Of course you don't want to throw away $100 bucks ($200 in my case as I will be paying for my Mom's ticket), but you can understand how horribly disappointed those of us from a galazy far away would be to see an understudy in the part and not Ron. It may be a great play, but many of us are planning trips (airfare, hotel, etc.) just to see him. Them's big bucks, and it's kinda like putting $1000 on red or black in Vegas. It's an expensive gamble. Antsy doesn't describe it. Remember when we were hoping and praying that the basketball finals would end so we'd all get "Fancy Footwork"? (Luckily Mouse did, and thanks again for helping us all get to see it too.) I'm on pins and needles wondering which date to buy, while wishing our favorite blond excellent health for the duration of his run!

Of course you're not wrong and it is frustrating. It's happened to me many times - grr! I surely do remember the FF - basketball finals - again: GRRRR...... Oy! I tell ya, he's gonna kill us ALL!

For anyone who has not seen "Bastard out of Carolina," it will be shown on Lifetime Movie Network on Dec. 17 at 11:30 pm. It's from 1996 and Ron plays stepfather to Jena's character. It's a very tough and unsugarcoated look at child abuse and molestation. It can be very tough to watch, but they are great in it. And I just have to add...speaking as one who was raised in one of the Carolinas, Ron does a very admirable Southern accent--for a guy from Queens, that is.

Well, I finally got an answer from our knowledgeable friend. It's not what I hoped she would say. She said it's a crap shoot. So I guess you buy the ticket and hope for the best. If maggie was right and you can leave if the understudy is on that night, that's great for people who live close, but not so great for those of us that live far away. And I think Bebe (formerly the Divine Mrs. E) is right on the money, but I wanted to add--and forgive me if this has already been said--but I think you'd be making the safest bet possible to buy Doubt tickets 1) early in the run (i.e., January or February) and 2) for a Saturday night performance, which is the most popular, and I bet, as a result, the least likely to feature an understudy (except in an emergency or absolutely unavoidable conflict). It sucks that there is no guarantee, and it would be terribly disappointing to have an understudy show up instead of Ron...but you're still in NYC, which to me is worth the $$ all on its own. I am seriously counting my blessings that I'm a 3-hour train ride from the city and already have tix to two Doubt performances.

I will definitely keep Saturday in mind, but unfortunately, there is absolutely no chance of me going in Jan-Feb. Maybe March Break--and that's probably a big maybe financially. But I haven't written it off. The more likely time is not until the middle of June when school is out. Sigh. And I wouldn't leave if the understudy was on cause I've never been to NY or Broadway so that would be exciting for me, but like everyone, I really really want to see Ron. I can only really afford to go once unless I go twice in one day. Ha!

In the Jan. 6 New York Times, there's an article about keeping Broadway shows fresh in the winter when there are few tourists. They quote Dame Eileen Atkins who starts opposite Our Ron next week: "Dame Eileen said she was planning private rehearsals on Sunday and Monday in her hotel room with Mr. Eldard and Jena Malone, who is also joining 'Doubt' next week as Sister James, an impressionable young nun." So we know whose hotel room he will be in this weekend, . Here's the whole article: www.nytimes.com/2006/01/06/theater/newsandfeatures/06cast.html
