I know Kyt does, and Veronica is doing some study. Does anyone else read braille? I had a little fun (ha) when I was in the hospital recently because I had my braille word puzzle book with me and was working on it late one night when someone came in for some vital signs or blood work or something. They flipped on the light and I was reading in bed. Great response: "Can you read that?" (Yes) I wanted to say "No I just like to feel the dots." Sort of like when I put the braille on some of my art quilts, people would say "Does that really say something?" I feel like saying "No I just put random dots on there to fake it." But I don't.

I'm not very good at it, but I do know the alphabet, numbers, some punctuation, and a couple of the abbreviations. It would take me forever to actually read anything, but I do know how to write it with a stylus and slate and with a Braille writer. During my Interpreter Training Program, I volunteered to work with the Deaf-blind at The Braille Institute in Los Angeles and one of the classes they taught was Braille (go figure) and I got to sit in on quite a few sessions. I wish I knew more (like Kyt). I had a Braille Institute shirt with some raised Braille dots and it was really annoying when guys would ask me if they could "read" the front of my shirt.

Two questions. First, are you just about back to 100%? I hope you are feeling a lot better. Second, are you a quilter? Do you use traditional designs or design your own? I have made three quilts, back when I had time. I want to hear about your work!

I was planning on starting this topic. I'm still at a very early beginning stage, since I'm learning it by myself. I got that "Braille for the sighted" book, both in the print and Braille versions, and I'm slowly making my way through it. I need to practice some more, since I have been busy lately and haven't had much time for it. Does anyone else know of any more books I can get to learn it? I will be getting the Braille contractions dictionary one of these days. Alice was kind enough to send me a Brailled note, and I was able to decipher most of it on the first try!

I know about half the letters. I'd like to learn more, maybe this fall when school starts and my life is more organized.

Funny, because I make custom Braille shirts with little crystals that spell out the words. Turning out to be a popular item. I did several for people that read "Blind Justice" when the show first aired.

My latest thing was combining my two biggest loves, quilting and comic books! I did a series of art quilts that commemorated the fortieth anniversary of my favourite comic book hero, Daredevil. I recreated some of the art from different artists over the years in thread painting. Here's a sample: You can see some of my other quilt stuff on my website: www.woodsidecountrystore.com I design patterns for a living.

Alice that is unbelievable! You are amazing. You are scary talented! You design your own stuff, that is wonderful, you must be an artist as well. My aunt is a pretty well known quilting author, but her stuff is much more traditional!

For some reason, this is all making me think of high school when schmeep used to practice putting on her making in the dark, so she would still be pretty "just in case" she ever went blind.

*sigh*
I knew THAT was coming. Okay, I have no memory of doing that, but it does sound like me. But beware...Jillaw was the friend who used to kiss the TV when Bo Duke was on (Sorry Jillaw, petty revenge) so...actually I don't see the connection, but I thought you should know.
And Jillaw, you've known me since birth. How sad that you can't spell my name!
Love, Shmeep
