Didn't know where to put this. Page Six of the NY post said Sean Penn was at a "Doubt" performance. Paying close attention to the priest; possibly in preparation for a movie adaptation. EGW Shawn Penn?! I can't see him as Father Flynn at all! Here's an idea, how about RON ELDARD as Father Flynn?! WHO??! ?

If what was posted yesterday was accurate -- the actors had to be contracted for a minimum of six months -- then I'm not sure the repacement cast of Doubt even qualified. Didn't they open beginning of February? Yes Maggie you are right, (even though one source did speculate that Eileen Atkins may have been nominated). It does say for a minumum of six months. I believe they began Jan 11, so that would only make it four months for them up to this point. Good job and I guess a good enough explanation why they passed up this wonderful cast. I just stumbled on this explanation of the Tony for Best Replacement Award and "why" there is none this year www.broadway.com/Gen/Buzz_Story.aspx?ci=529659

I finally got to see Doubt last Thursday evening, and it truly exceeded my expectations. RE's performance was outstanding. Everyone in this group knows how well he can play a complex character, and Father Flynn was yet another example. His ability to portray the nuances of his character is what keeps us guessing and doubting long after we've left the theater. I was surprised at how many humorous moments there are in the play, considering the serious theme, but it was a real treat to see RE doing both comedy and drama in a single role. His ability to do this was quite impressive.
Eileen Atkins blew me away. She was amazing. Her performance alone was worth the price of the ticket. I left the theater thinking that I was as happy to have seen her performance as I was to have seen Ron's.
I did wait by the stage door after the play. (I knew I could never show my face around here again if I didn't). The only two cast members who came out were Ron and Adriane Lenox. Both were kind enough to sign my Playbill. Most of the group waiting at the stage door were theater students from Texas, who had been in NYC seeing plays all week. Not surprisingly, most of the conversation was between Ron and the members of that group. He was very engaging and charming, asking the theater students about the plays they'd seen and letting them (and me) take multiple pictures. I hope to have some pictures to share in a few days.
If you have not yet seen Doubt and can get to NYC between now and July 2nd, it's well worth the trip.

This cartoon is on the Theatre Talk site: I can sort of see Eileen Atkins/Sister Aloysius in this, but that's supposed to be Ron? I just don't see it, except maybe in the earlobes (Dogma will be so pleased). And what is that in his hand? Or, considering the subject of the play, do I really want to know? I brought this over from the first Doubt thread. Now that I've seen the play, I think I know what he's holding in his hand: a ballpoint pen!

At the risk of raising the controversial issue of RE's fashion sense once again - what is up with that black knit shirt? Do you think he has just the one - or did he buy a dozen on sale and he cycles through them? I've seen that shirt more than I have some items of my own wardrobe. (And yes, I do realize the implications of that statement.)

It seems that one way to get karma around here is to post pictures, so here are two more. The first is of Ron Eldard and me: The second is of Ron conversing with two of the theater students:

You find a black shirt you like? Buy a bunch of them -- black fades, especially if you have to use the laundromat. He dresses like a New York guy, that's all. At least now that it's warm he's stopped wearing those dorky Finian's Rainbow hats. Is it me, or does that black leather jacket look suspiciously like Ted's? Nicely broken in, wherever it came from. AND GREAT PICTURES, MLM88 -- THANKS FOR POSTING THEM!!!

I wish he had remembered that when he was trying to channel an Irish fisherman at the Freedomland premiere. Oops!
