My mother alerted me to this documentary. My local public library has it and I'm going to watch it tonight. It's from the NFB, National Film Board of Canada, so it will be a quality production.
Acting Blind 990806,VH Video 52:04 min JIS 2006 0856
The members of the cast gather several nights a week. They are in heavy rehearsals for an upcoming performance at the renowned Place des Arts in Montreal. The actors struggle with their lines and work out blocking as the director praises them and chides them to go further into character. The play they are staging, blind, is the story of several blind characters negotiating their way through the tricky emotional and physical maze of life without sight.
Most of these actors understand their roles extremely well. Most of these actors are either blind or visually impaired. Acting Blind is a touching film about the making of Dancing to Beethoven. The film takes us deep into the lives of the actors. We hear stories of their shock and disbelief at first losing their sight and of their struggles coping with the terrifying world of blindness. We hear them talk about grieving and pining for the visual world and about their hope and resignation in the face of an often difficult reality. They tell the moving story of how this play is itself a victory, a type of salvation, for each of them.
By opening night, they are a closeknit cast, wellhoned and ready for the stage. They wait for the curtain to rise, for their turn to step from the wings out into the light.

Had a Yahoo alert and there is a movie on Lifetime Tuesday night called "Blind Obsession" about a cop blinded in the line of duty ( sound familiar : . If anyone has it and feels the urge--or the curiosity--to see what it is about, give me a heads up. Thanks.

At least it'll be one Lifetime movie NOT about Dad shtupping the babysitter, or how some Twinkie's husband was leading a double life, or how to find love with a hunk who conveniently shows up on your doorstep after your stockbroker husband dumps you for the massage therapist . . .

I was curious and looked it up on IMDB. Apparently, it's a variation on "Fatal Attraction." After reading about it, I vaguely recall seeing it several years ago -- and I also recall it wasn't very good.

A couple of nights ago I dreamed I met Steve Guttenberg. We talked for a while about his career. I told him I liked that goofy movie he made with Sally Field and James Caan (in the dream he told me the name of it but it escapes me now). Anyway, right after we finished talking about Cocoon I told him the best movie he ever made was "To Race the Wind."

I think that this has been mentioned before here somewhere (by Alice maybe?)
But anyway, this is here tonight as part of a film festival and I'll probably go see it.

There's a movie opening tonight in which Jeff Daniels plays a blind man. It's called The Lookout.
Hmmm, now what will I do this weekend? Hmmmm....
I am so so there! I'd be there anyway, but this is actually getting good reviews. It's by the screenwriter of Get Shorty.

Let us know if it's any good. (Chocky) It was pretty good (The Lookout). I wouldn't call it a must-see, but it was enjoyable. A heist flick where the main character has a mild brain injury. Jeff Daniels' character was kind of weird though. His eyes kept rolling around in his head. Very different from Jim Dunbar, who kept a steady gaze. I don't know--do some blind people have difficulty controlling their eyes? I thought it made him look mad (mentally ill mad), rather than blind. And no, Jeff Daniels' character is not the lookout for the heist.

Some blind people do have 'rolling eyes' esp if they've been blind since birth. It also depends a bit on the cause of the blindness. Anyway, not having seen the movie I don't know if Jeff Daniels is doing a realistic impression or not. Will keep an eye out for it (no pun intended) in case it is released here.
