Is anyone else out there a baseball fan? I am a fan of -- don't laugh -- the NL West champion San Diego Padres. I know, I know, they are going into the playoffs with the worst record of any playoff team this year. But I'm hoping the aliens who took over their bodies in May, when they went 22-6, will return for the postseason. And in case you haven't heard much about him (most of the country outside San Diego hasn't), their pitching ace Jake Peavy is the real deal. Go, Friars!

I'm right smack in the middle of Yankees country and I am a fan. Big time. (And they won the AL East division today after a spectacularly bad season, so there's hope for any team.) Love October baseball, and they usually play in October (!). So if they wind up against the Padres, mlm, I'll be polite, but I'll be rooting for Jeter & Co! By the way, I've been working on a little theory of my own that I'd like to throw out here. I am (grudgingly) happy for all those poor Bostonians who finally got to revel in a little glory last year when the Sox broke the Curse of the Babe and won the World Series. However -- look at everything that has happened in the past year. In no particular order of importance: the Miss America Pageant left Atlantic City after some 85 years, the Pope died, there were two cataclysmically monstrous hurricanes in the Gulf and a killer tsunami in the Far East, and -- oh why not put it on the list? -- the best TV show to hit the tube in 20 years was cancelled after 13 weeks. Is it possible that the Red Sox winning the World Series constituted a major interruption in the time/space continuum? Could be!

Well Maggie, the only way to prove your theory is for the Sox to win it again this year and see what the following year brings. And, being from Sox country I am here to tell you they're winning the wild card today and then another face off with the Yankees will be coming up for the pennant race. Love October baseball and most especially when the Red Sox are in the thick of it. (and also there have been plenty of earthquakes, floods, cancelled tv shows, and Titanic sinkings in the past 86 years when the Sox never won a world series, so I think there just has to be another reason for all the disasters in the past year. We Sox fans suffer enough, please don't put the cancellation of B/J (sob) on us too. )

Your location says Connecticut - that's still part of New England, isn't it? Aren't there any Sox fans there?

I understand Connecticut is about evenly divided between Sox and Yankees. Both my neighbor and my husband's business partner are from Ct. down 95 and both are big Yankee fans. Last year during the pennant race, I could hardly speak to either of them. (but It's only a game, though). Yesterday, when the Yankees beat the Sox, and I was cleaning up after the doggies in the backyard, I was tempted to toss it over the fence. But Maggie, if there should be a repeat Sox-Yankee series, I promise I will be civil.(it is only a game, yeah, Mary, keep saying that.)

Surely Maggie you know that I'm just trying to give you a hard time. I would not compromise our B/J friendship over this silly rivalry. But when you're born into it, it's tough. "I'm just saying" it's not called the greatest rivalry in sports "for nuthin." And I am realistic to acknowledge the fact that Jimmy is more than likely a Yankee fan. And would I marry him, Absolutely! We do know that Tom is a Yankee fan. There is a bobble head Derek Jeter doll on his desk. (See Under the Gun, when they are trying to reach the DOA's mom at some Ecological Resort ("whatever that is") and the camera is panning the desks.) Voila! Bobble Head Derek, or maybe it is Bobble head Giambi, or Bobble head Matsui......anyway you look at it they're definitely pinstripes.

Hey, casey-girl, I would never take offense and I have plenty of friends who are Sox fans! It is only a game (keep telling yourself that!), and the Yankees/Sox rivalry is the engine that drives that game. Not for nuthin' is is called The Greatest Rivalry in Sports. And it is always interesting. ;D
It's a miracle the Yanks clinched the AL East yesterday, anyway. Their playing has been erratic this season, to say the least. Personally, I think it might have something to do with the fact that just about everyone on the team is . . . oh, about 37. They need some younger players (Mariano Rivera can't close every game for them until the end of time), and boy! do they need some decent pitching. They can hit forever but pitch? Paid a bloody fortune for The Big Unit, and his performance has been spotty at best. So while I love my Yanks, I am not immune to their shortcomings.
BTW, the town in CT where I live is just over the New York State border, so technically we're part of the New York Metropolitan area and not New England. So yeah, it's de Yankees country fah sure!

So......who is that bobble head, Maggie? Can you tell? I can see the little NY on his chest but can not see a number?
Now it's official Maggie, it's like deja vu all over again. See ya in the post season. Sox and Yanks. Yeah!

Cardinals 8, Padres 5. Pads rallied in the ninth, but too little, too late.

My sincerest and most heartfelt condolences. I can only say, "Wait until next year." (The title of a great book by Doris Kearns Goodwin, by the way.) Sorry! Thanks, maggie. I freely confess my original post was a shameless attempt to garner some sympathy. As for "wait till next year," I'm not quite ready to say it yet, but objectively, I have to admit things don't look good. I was going to add a comment to my original post, to the effect that we didn't see the real Jake Peavy on the mound today. Now we find out he was pitching with a broken rib or two -- ouch! -- and is out for the rest of the year -- double ouch! Yes, I've read Doris Kearns Goodwin's book and loved it. I grew up a fan of the Washington Senators, who decamped for Minnesota a few years after the Dodgers moved west, so I could identify with her feelings when her beloved Dodgers abandoned Brooklyn.

Now I have to say, "wait until next year" . . . but it was fun while it lasted.

Now I have to say, "wait until next year" . . . but it was fun while it lasted. Hey, mlm, here's a great bit of baseball lore, perhaps a curse second only to the Curse of the Babe. It's been exactly fifty years, this year, since the Brooklyn Dodgers -- De Bums! -- won the World Series. Two years later they broke the hearts of everyone in Brooklyn when they moved to California . . . . . . and they never won the Series again. Heh.

Congratulations to the Chicago White Sox, who just won the World Series. Now -- how long is it until pitchers and catchers report for spring training?
