I think "Dead Zone" is THE best Stephen King movie and Walken just brings so much emotion to Johnny. As does the (ex)girlfriend. Just an excellent movie. And Martin Sheen is just scum. I don't own it, but watch it every time it is on. Walken is one of those actors that just chews the scenery with the quirky characters, and after a while I just need a break and an aspirin! Do a regular character for a change. What was the one he did on SNL --- "The European"... "The Cosmopolitan"..? I forget, but it was a classic!

That's why I liked him in The Dead Zone, he made that before he got a reputation for playing creepy characters. Now those seem to be the only roles he gets. He is great in the Deerhunter, he won an oscar for that one. I just remembered another one of my favorite movies, Breaking Away. I love that movie, I watch it everytime it is on. "Mama, mama, the Italians are coming." I love it! Poor Dennis Christopher, the years have not been kind to him.

Five? You want me to keep it to five? I can do ten. How about ten?
In no particular order:
1. "Day of the Jackal": Taut, crisp, compelling. 2. "Some Like it Hot": Nobody does it better than Billy Wilder. Cracks me up every time. "But, Osgood, I'm a man." "Well, nobody's perfect." 3. "Sunset Boulevard": Billy Wilder again, and William Holden at his glorious peak. The James Wong Howe cinematography takes film noir to a new level. 4. "All About Eve": "Fasten your seat belts, it's going to be a bumpy night." And what a ride it was! 5. The nine Fred Astaire/Ginger Rogers black & white films for RKO, counted as one -- although if I had to pick one it would be "Swingtime." I bow to no one in my devotion to the Divine Mr. Astaire. 6. "The Big Parade": A silent, and the first great war (anti-war) picture. Check it out the next time it's on TCM -- John Gilbert is amazing. 7. "All the President's Men": Best line? Hal Holbrook in the garage, coolly saying,"Don't tell me you think this is all the work of little Donald Segretti." 8. "Jaws": I defy anyone channel-surfing to come across this movie, watch two seconds, and turn it off. "You're gonna need a bigger boat." 9. "Gone With the Wind": The granddaddy of them all. Nowhere near as good as the book, but Viv draws me in every time. 10. "Chinatown": Jack and Faye at their best, John Huston as the very incarnation of Evil, and one of the best music scores ever.

I forgot "Moonstruck!" How could I forget "Moonstruck?" Rats, now I'm up to eleven. Okay, count it as two lists.

I don't have a "five best" list, but I wanted to mention one rather obscure film that may appeal to "Blind Justice" fans. It's "Proof," a 1991 Australian film with Hugo Weaving (aka "Elrond" and whatshisname in the "Matrix" movies) and Russell Crowe (pre-Hollywood). It won lots of awards in Australia.
It's hard to explain, but Weaving plays Martin, a blind man who doesn't trust anyone to describe things to him and takes photographs for proof. Then he meets Andy, a dishwasher played by Crowe, whom he trusts to describe his photos to him. There is a psycho-sexual triangle with Martin's housekeeper and a hilarious sequence at a drive-in movie. I'm not doing it justice, but maybe you get the general idea.
I also wanted to mention two classics: "To Kill a Mockingbird" and "Inherit the Wind."

Pitch Black Road Warrior Soldier Equilibrium Daredevil (Theatrical cut) Kyt Okay, Kyt, you made me curious and now I'm asking for a little education. "Road Warrior" I've seen (and loved -- early Mel!) but I have to confess, red-faced, that I know nothing about the other movies on your list. Can you broaden my mind a little? Thanks!

Have you seen The Year of Living Dangerously? Great early Mel and Linda Hunt is not to be believed. BTW, your list was wonderful, very dignified. I'm red faced too, I've only heard of one of the other films on Kyt's list!

Oh yeah, and I'm a big fan of Peter Weir movies (including "Year of Living Dangerously"), too. And don't forget movies with Conrad Hall as the DP (Director of Photography). This is starting to get out of hand!

Daredevil Heartbreak Ridge Shawshank Redemption The Sum of All Fears The Saint Not a complete list, and not necessarily in that order, except for Daredevil, which is the movie I have now seen more times than any other in the privacy of my own home.
