Trapped at Target attempting to buy a squirt gun to shoot slugs. --GB Oh no Dawn, not the slugs again? Didn't that rain wash them away? And a Panel discussion that starts at 11 at night! I'd be sleeping through that.

Also glad to hear you're back GB. Like BJO, I have missed you! We also had quite a storm last night. No tornado warnings but lots of lightning and rain, rain, rain. The rain gauge was full to the brim so guessing at least 2 inches. There is a low place in the yard next to ours and it always floods. Last night you could have taken a dingy out on it, I swear!!! I pick my sister up when she works late, so of course the storm hit right when she closed up. She had to wait about 10-15 minutes before it slacked enough for me to make a dash for the car. First thing stepped into a puddle, then another one, watching the sky because of humongous lightning bolts. She was waiting on me and we dashed for home! It lasted about an hour and then rained off and on all night, nothing major. Everything got a good watering--including me! The high tomorrow is supposed to be in the low 60's--first real taste of fall! Sorry to hear that the slugs are back, GB. I was covering one bed and there were two huge slugs just laying there They were the first good size ones I've seen this year. I sprinkled some bug dust all over the bed and covered it with leaves for the winter. Hopefully that will take care of the slugs and any other creepy crawlies that might decide to take up residence! One thing I've really noticed are the spiders. Huge! Not as big as your hand but big enough. I just hate walking into their webs and spinners. They get all over your glasses and in your hair--yuck!!!

It was 11C here today and sunny. That's about mid 50's. I pity you, Inuvik! I would not leave the house if it were that cold except for work. (And I'd have about 7 layers on.)

I can sympathize, having spent four winters in New England. But it don't think it ever got that cold, even in Vermont. Stay warm! By the way, planes fly to San Diego from Canada every day.

I remember one winter here when it got down to -25 F. It didn't feel bad because there was no wind. Right now it is in the mid 60's. It it supposed to be nice until Tuesday, then rain moves in and by Thursday they say it will be in the 30's with snow showers. Of course, this is Indiana and that could change in the next hour As BJO suggested, wear plenty of layers! And if you don't have to go out, don't!!!

A homeless man died here last night. They figure it's because it's so cold and the shelters are all full. They are almost positive he froze to death. They have since opened another one by declaring a state of emergency (meaning they can bypass the permits, community consultations, inevitable appeals by residents, etc. In other words red tape). But looks like it was too late for this man.
Next time I whine about the weather, someone shoot me. We all have so much to be thankful for! Let's never forget it.
Lucky BJO: Eastern Canada, on the other hand, is enjoying unseasonably warm temperatures and expecting more of the same.

I agree that we need to remember to be thankful for sure, but I don't envy you or wish for your cold weather. I love the weather we're having right now. I hope it lasts for a while. Even when it gets colder, I don't think we'll catch up to you. Brrrrrr!

Looks like your cold weather is heading our way. A Canadian artic front is expected here by Thursday, dropping us at least 30 degrees in one day! Time to break out the long johns. Well, maybe not quite yet but we did exchange the rakes for snow shovels!

A drop of 15-20 degrees. Maybe they'll be wrong about all that but I doubt it.

Well, winter arrived with a vengeance today. Yesterday, it rained all day long , finally stopping around 9 o'clock. The front swept through, dropping us about 30 degrees. It was 55-57 on Thursday, last time I saw the temp today 24-25. The snow was not heavy, there is barely a skiff on the ground, but the wind has been horrific. Gusts of 40-45 miles per hour! Walking to work (had to break out the parka!--shades of the wind ripping through those tiers at Attica), I had to stop a couple of times and put my back to the wind because it was just so strong and once it practically knocked me off balance. It looks like the wind is finally calming down and tomorrow it is supposed to be clear but cold. It is December after all! At least we haven't had the flooding that has plagued some parts of the state even though my back yard is one muddy mess!
Hope those still in the path of this storm come off as lucky as we were here!

Ashatan has a question. What do they put on the road in your area after a big snowfall--sand or salt? In some parts of Canada they are starting to use sand because salt is so hard on the cars. (Unfortunately, not in mine).

(Unfortunately, not in mine). Here it's a combination of sand and salt, but the huge pile here in town has not been touched yet, with such a mild winter so far. I don't think the worry is so much what it does to your cars, but rather the runoff into the water systems seems to be the big argument against salt.
