When I was little (and since I'm not all that old, I mean 15-20 years ago) after a snowfall the streets would be coated with cinders that were spread by an ash truck. I don't live there anymore so I'm not sure what they do now. THe main roads around here are salted when it snows.

Yep. Salt here in DC too. It gets ugly soon after a snow so I always love to watch the snow actually coming down because that's when it's still pretty. Not that we're due to have snow anytime soon... I've never been in a blizzard. I read all about them in the Little House books and those descriptions were so vivid that I almost felt I had experienced a blizzard, but I have yet to see a real one. One day I expect to, but they're not real common around here.

February, 1996 - HUGE blizzard in New York; state of emergency granted, as well; only workers that were "necessary" were allowed in the city (i.e., nurses, doctors, cops, firemen) - it was AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! If I find pictures of my buried car, I'll post them - it was a hoot! I remember I had to go food shopping and Michael and I were walking, enjoying the time off and I fell in a hole of snow! He turned around, I was gone - we still laugh over that one!

Here we use sand. They use salt on the sidewalks though. But it's not just sand, it's huge pieces of stones! My province is famous for lots of cracked windows. It's so bad it's extra on your auto insurance! You can choose to be covered or not.
I see on the news Denver has 60 cm of snow. Be careful!

In town, they use sand but the state highway crews still use salt.
The problem I have with it here in town is that they never seem to sand our street and they are pretty chinzy on sanding the intersections. If you really need to stop its at an intersection!
Also, people here tend to be lax in shoveling their sidewalks so you end up walking on the street if the snow is deep. You are slipping and sliding the same as the cars, which is not a good thing!
An interesting tidbit. A few years ago after a snow we had what we call here "snow rollers." The snow has to be a certain consistency and then coupled with wind and humidity it will roll up kind of like a carpet. They aren't huge--the biggest was probably about a foot across. There were five or six in the yard across the street from my house. I have only seen them that one time and from what the weather people say they are rather rare, at least in our area.

whew! Our storm in Denver is finally over. The official total was 20 inches to 4 feet of snow! Denver International is still closed and is not scheduled to open until tomorrow at noon. About 4,000 travelers were stranded there. My hubby is in snow heaven. He grew up in Leadville, Colorado high up in the mountains. He is used to this much snow. It is very beautiful.

Today, its in the 50's and this morning I noticed that the pussy willow bush is blooming--in the middle of December!!!!! Yikes!

We have snow! For the first time in my life I am looking out the window and watching snow fall. I know for most of you that is not a novelty, but for a So Cal girl spending a winter on the plains this is all very exciting!
Modified to add: I still want to go HOME!

Congratulations, Mouse! As an ex-SoCal girl myself, I vividly recall moving East a couple of years ago and getting a little too giddy when it first snowed. The Boy and I did a happy dance around the condo, if I recall correctly. I heard you might have heaps of Little House on the Prairie style blizzarding headed your way, so keep that feeling of awe and wonder intact even if you end up buried. I wish we would get some snow here. It's supposed to be in the sixties tomorrow. What kind of New Year is that? We're pining for some white outside.

Oh, Jeez. I read that really fast and thought you'd said "Little Mouse on the Prairie." Which she is. Snow is beautiful. There is nothing more lovely than falling snow, which is nature's little dirty trick since once you have to start shoveling it? Feh. But how wonderful for you!

It was almost 50 degrees here New Year's Day and no snow! (Totally unheard of) It's been so warm the snowdrops are coming up and they're not supposed to come up until spring.
