I don't know about anyone else's 4th of July but it rained here all day long! We had over an inch of rain...no heavy downpour just a light rain from about 9AM until nightfall. Needless to say, fireworks were rained out so everyone had to wait till last night. Our poor dogs nearly hyperventilated. Hopefully, the snaps, crackles and pops are nearly done for this year!

We had a terrible thunderstorm last night around 10:15. I had just gone to bed. I saw the lightning and tried to put a pillow over my head to not see the lightning. In about 2 minutes later, the hail started pounding the windows. It sounded like millions of rocks were being thrown at the windows. I went out into the landing and Joe said we were under a tornado warning. We went down in the basement to wait it out. The sound was as loud as a freight train. My brother called us and said that he was out in the storm. He said his car was hit by lightning and totally shattered his windshield. It really freaked his fiance out. I am so glad that he was okay. I guess it was not a tornado but a microburst. It was like gale force winds. For miles on end today over a mile wide were downed power lines, huge trees uprooted, trees totally stripped of their leaves and hail by the foot. I have lived here for a long time and I only know of one other storm like this. Usually this close to the mountains, we don't have to worry about tornadoes. I guess the combination of very hot temperatures meeting up with a cold front caused it. So many people lost their gardens and flowers along with the damage to the trees.

Boy, sure sounds like a bad one. Glad you and your family especially your brother are OK. That would have freaked me out. We had a tornado/wind shear hit here once and sounds a lot like your microburst. The tops of the pine trees were twisted off and plain disappeared. Several trees were uprooted and roofs ripped off. Even the old drive-in theater lost its screen in that one. Mother Nature has a way of getting our attention, big time!

Wow, Lindy! I am glad you and your family survived unscathed! It must have been scarey for your brother. I also experienced something like that when we lived in Indiana....EONS ago. It happened during the middle of the night and I was home alone with my son who was then 12 or 13. BIG thunder and lightening and a sound like a freight train. When daylight came we also had a path about a mile wide and a couple miles long where trees had been uprooted, etc. They didn't say tornado, thought more like wind sheer. Whatever it was, it is something I won't forget and I am sure you won't forget your experience either!

This has certainly been another year for weather. This morning it was soooo humid it was hard to breathe. I swear it must have been 200% Something had to break and it did. A doozy of a storm roared through. I haven't checked the rain gages yet--hopefully they are still there! The wind was furious. The roof of the 4-H building at the local fairgrounds collapsed--thankfully fair was last week or it could have been really bad--and a silo at a local pet food producer also came down. Several trees split, power lines came down and someone hydroplaned and crashed into a pole. We just has some limbs down, nothing major thank goodness. Mother Nature at her finest!

We had a snow day today and one tomorrow. It has snowed quite a bit. Usually we get a rain snow mix this time of year. I have heard from different sources that our area is supposed to get a lot of snow this winter. I hate having 9 months of winter.

Wow, winter has hit with a vengeance. Last night we had rain, quite a bit, then this morning it turned to snow and the temp has been dropping steadily. We are smack dab in the middle of a huge low pressure which is funneling wind in from all directions. They said we could have gusts up to 50 mph and I think we have had some. I was trying to walk to work and felt like I was going to be knocked right off my feet! We haven't had much snow but the wind chill tonight is supposed to be zero and the high tomorrow maybe in the teens. The wind could diminish to maybe 30mph! They say this front will be moving east so hang onto your hat!

Calling all East Coasties! Please check in and let us know how you're surviving the Blizzard of '09. Everyone OK? Snowbound? (Probably). Stranded? (I hope not). Cabin fever setting in yet?

Checking in from RI where we got close to twenty inches. I only left the house to shovel the walk, and dig out the cars. I have a niece coming up from FL tomorrow for the holidays and I am wondering if she will make it since flights were all cancelled today and things should be pretty backed up. No cabin fever yet. Between football, netflix and a good book (The Lost Symbol), "I'm good."Rosie on the deck last night wondering if she wants to attempt those stairs. (more like a slide).

My area seems to have escaped the brunt of the storm and have only 6 inches of snow. So not stranded, snowbound, and no cabin fever. In fact, I rather enjoyed not leaving the house since I got home Friday!

Today, we were very sunny and in the 50's.

Thanks for checking in. I hope our other members on the East Coast weathered the storm as well. I will be joining you on the East Coast, but not until Wednesday. I hope things will be more or less back to normal by then. Rducasey, did your niece from Florida ever get there?
