I have written you a quick epilogue for our previously untitled fic, now titled, Stepping Up.
Hope you enjoy and that it has tidied up any questions or worries.

Uncle Jimmy? That's so sweet! I can totally understand how they might keep in touch with this family even though I know they aren't supposed to. Some cases just tug at the old heartstrings and this would be one since kids are so helpless when it comes to situations like this. That happened to me a couple of times in my years of daycare. In fact, that's how Willi and I became such good friends.
I also loved the fact that the knife was in the fridge. Such an unlikely place, but ingenious. I can see why a crook would give it a shot. Comic book heroes! Too funny!

However, I can't really agree with the rest of this - I've known situations were a victim was checked up on by detectives working on the case. To be honest here, I happen to have been one of them recently when I was the victim of an assault on the train back in November. I don't think there is a rule that says the police cannot stay in contact with a victim to make sure he or she are doing okay, offering support, or anything else. As I said, I know it was done for me.

I have also checked up on some past day care kids but never kept in close contact--except for Willi. I was just thinking, as I think N was, that a prolonged contact might be frowned upon. I know it was when I was in daycare. Maybe the police are not the same as that?

True points on both, particularly about Karen in the "boys club;" yet I don't see the necessity in prolonging this part of the discussion. Suffice it to say that I am speaking solely on my own personal experience with the extraordinary men and women of the NYPD, in handling my assault case, handling us post-911, and my own family members who have been and are proud members of New York's Finest.

I can't comment on the question of whether police officers would stay in touch with victims in real life, but I did like the fact that they did in the story.
In fact... thank you for the whole epilogue! I'm so glad you posted this!
It tied up a number of loose ends, and left us feeling good... which given the topics you dealt with in the story is quite an achievement!
I appreciate that you showed Jim and Karen interacting with people outside the squad. Beyond Christie and Nick, in the series, there really wasn't much of a hint that either of them had a life outside work, and it's nice to think that they might be able to maintain relationships and friendships. (I discount Greg Hermason (sp?) as a 'current' friend in the series, because it was pretty obvious that Jim hadn't seen him in a long, long time.)
Krissie.

I agree with Krissie, it is a great Epilogue and seeing Karen and Dunbar outside the squad is interesting - especially since they are being so nice Karen trying to fix counseling for the family and Jim quietly enabling it is so sweet, they surely deserved that after what they had been going through. And how did you ever come up with the name Preston Wade ;D Barbara, I'm sorry to hear you got assaulted, I hope it wasn't too bad for you. - Chris

Thanks for rounding out the story! You know that some cases would be hard to just walk away from when they are over. Its nice that Karen chose to stay involved and that she was willing to take advice from Jim plus nice that Jim recognized that she wanted to do it on her own. And Jim as surrogate dad for Bradley! I could almost see the boy blushing trying to describe the girl to him!

[quote author=krissie board=fanficfeedback Barbara, I'm sorry to hear you got assaulted, I hope it wasn't too bad for you. - Chris Well, I'll be open about this, I've nothing to be ashamed of; first of all, thank you. Secondly, briefly to not avert the topic here, I was coming home on the train when a creep decided to touch me. I got in his face, screaming and pointing him out to other women telling them to remember him because he will do it to them, too. I then threw him off the train - seriously, I did, and reported it to police. Maybe one week later, he was apprehended for doing the same, I was called for a line-up, and there he was.

That's the way to kick butt! Glad you're ok and that they caught the guy.

As excellent as ever. I can allways imagine well what you have written, Natasha! Thanks for it ;D
I loved the fight scene in the staircase, and when they found the mother and the baby. It was quite heartbreaking.
I am looking forward the next one!!!! ;D
