OK I'll bite.....Dean Who? (said Mary, who is not always in the know) Neither is Anita. Who is Dean?? Dean Winchester - a character from the TV series Supernatural, as played by the actor Jensen Ackles - centre of my avi... And yes, this does kinda fit in travelogues, since I had to travel all the way across Sydney (like 70+ kms worth) to get to the Con .

Travelling across Sydney is a travelogue in my view - where was the Con?? I think going to Fiji fits, even if it's daggy and for a holiday. We're booking on Monday - YAHOO. 7 days. 25-28C. Kids have own bedroom. Nothing to do there. Yay. M

Grumpy we're not going to Fiji til September now - why am I surprised that yet again the Young-Murphys are subject to the vagaries of Parliamentary sitting schedules and which Bill is before which Committee at any given time. But we've almost booked and it looks really nice in the brochures. Re the cross-Sydney travelogue, Kasman that is not a travelogue it is a trek. I consider Erskineville to UNSW a travelogue given the traffic quagmire that is Anzac Parade and to be avoided at all costs. Downtown Kensington and Randwick have not seen this little Black duck for many a year - when I go to the beach out that way (at least twice a week depending on the season) I go down Gardiners Road and then to either Rainbow Street for Coogee or Fitzgerald Ave for Maroubra. Anzac Parade is just hideous in my strong view - braving that particular traffic nightmare is a travelogue in itself I reckon and you are to be commended. Where the blue blazes did you park?? Re UNSW I was there to do a Conference gig a few weeks ago and I swear it has replaced the junior rugby league oval on the cliff face at Coogee as Matilda's coldest place in Sydney. I was at the function centre looking down onto said dread Anzac Parade complete with gloves and decided love the ocean as I do am happy with my dwelling in the cramped inner city in winter. Brrrr as you can see I am ovahhhh itttt -can someone please post some happy Northern Hemisphere summer pics? M M

I agree with you about Anzac Parade - I avoided as much of it as I could. Sorry to hear about Fiji, but that's life, isn't it. Personally I've got the wrong skin for the beach and never got there at all this last summer.

Thanks for identification Poss. yeah it's life ... just grumpy and a bit over a) job b) winter and c) being political stafer's missus and thus single parent for a lotta years. Suffice to say it won't be lastin beyond this term of government!! Re beach my poor daughter got her old man's skin - translucent - I have to say we almost fell over when she popped out and my mother said 'we've never had one like that before", bless. It is magnificent but not the best for this climate so we sunscreen the poor kid up like nobody's business thus at the beach she is known as the crumbed cutlet. She doesn't seem not to be able to roll in the sand. But we've booked - anybody been to Denarau Island???M

Bye everybody. I'm off. Think of me when you're asleep in your bed tonight and I'm trying to sleep on a bus. We are stopping to visit relatives on the way to the bus station. I don't leave till 11:45 pm and I'll get there at 7:00 am tomorrow. It will be the same coming home. They'll all be back Monday and I'll be home Tues after another fun night on the bus. But hey, I can't complain. The bus was dirt cheap leaving more money for fun.
Have a great weekend guys. See you Tuesday.

I'm on Lindy's computer. Don't know if I'll be able to do it everyday. We've had a fun day and will be going to see Wicked very soon. We went to Levain's, took a horse and buggy ride through Central Park and Lindy took her first subway ride. We have lots of pics to share when we get home.

Greetings from RI! Mary and I were fortunate enough to spend the majority of the day together on Monday. The highlight was a visit to the Astor’s Beachwood. There the Beachwood Theatre Company portrays members of the Astor Family and their household staff. Visitors are treated as though they are members of the The 400 and guests of the family. We started our visit in the Reception Room. We went first the the kitchen, where cornbread was being prepared. We saw Mrs. Astor’s bedroom, Detail of her Christmas tree: And the Astor Daughter’s room, which had a lovely view of the Newport coastline. Mr Astor’s bedroom: The tour ends in the Ballroom where the staff and family entertained us with song and encouraged us to join them in a Polka. They taught us a parlor game. There was more dancing, and finally we all joined in singing Joy to the World. Can you see Mary in this picture? It was an extremely enjoyable experience which gave us real insight into the life of the privileged and their household staff during the year 1891.

Can you see Mary in this picture? Yes! ;D Like Mary and Kathy, I, too, traveled back to the Gilded Age during my Christmas trip to the East Coast. I was in southeastern Pennsylvania, near the Delaware border. This is Dupont country, so we visited the Nemours Mansion, home of Alfred I. Dupont: The mansion is 47,000 square feet filled with European antiques and lots and lots of gold leaf. It was built in 1909-1910, as the Gilded Age was ending. It was recently restored and opened to the public. Alfred's widow lived there until 1970. Can you imagine actually living in such a place? I didn't take any pictures, because I didn't have my camera with me, and they don't allow photography inside anyway. The photo above is from Wikipedia. I also spotted a piece of Heisey glass!

Kathy, thank you for the pictures. Thank God that you bring a camera! It was another fun day for Kathy and Mary! I've lived in Newport my whole life and never went into the places that kathy picks for us to see when she comes to town! I'm glad she chose The Astor's home as it was so interesting. John Jacob Astor went down on the Titanic. As we were visiting the mansion ,the year is 1891 so it is another, let's see, 21 years before the Titanic sinks. As such, we are warned not to mention it to the household staff or family members, as they will think we are daft. They never heard of an unsinkable ship. It was so fun to talk to them and just ask questions about them. They are so well versed in the times and the family. Kathy and I even got to dance together in the ballroom which was really funny. (As guests of the family we are encouraged to partake in all the fun. ) Brought back memories of a certain dance class and who was leading and who was following. And Martha thanks for sharing your mansion tour too. Happy New Year everyone.

Karma for spotting Mary....and for posting this. Our A/R supervisor lives in Philadelphia and he has told me about the DuPont homes and encouraged me to go there. I will have to do so! Beachwood is the only Newport Mansion that I know of that allows photography inside. We went to The Breakers in August when I was here and photography was strictly forbidden! I truly enjoyed Beachwood because of the interaction with the "residents and staff". They were so informative. I particularly enjoyed the Housekeepers response to Mary when Mary asked how she met her husband (the grounds keeper).
